Dr. Gazzaniga Elected New Division Chief for Sports Medicine at HOI

David Gazzaniga, M.D., board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon at Newport Orthopedic Institute, has been elected as the new Division Chief for Sports Medicine at Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI). As the head team physician of the Los Angeles Chargers, it is no surprise that HOI developed a new role where Dr. Gazzaniga will be the first Division Chief of Sports Medicine at HOI.

Dr. Gazzaniga will be responsible for the continuum of care for the entire sports medicine service line. He wants to ensure the community of Orange County can have access to the latest advanced sports medicine care through the development of a new high-quality sports medicine institute within HOI. Through Dr. Gazzaniga’s leadership, HOI’s sports medicine program will be dedicated to conduct research, train athletes, educate, prevent injuries, and further develop and train other sports medicine doctors.

“Dr. Gazzaniga is a world-class orthopedic surgeon whose passion for getting weekend warriors, amateurs and professional athletes alike back into the game is unparalleled,” said Jennifer Mitzner, CEO of HOI. “Hoag Orthopedic Institute would like to congratulate Dr. Gazzaniga on his appointment as our first Division Chief for Sports Medicine.”

“It’s an honor to lead this program knowing we will serve our patients with high quality musculoskeletal care in the best way possible. I’m excited to plan the creation of a sports medicine institute within HOI, a new world class entity to serve our communities, high schools and athletes of all abilities, shapes and sizes,” said Dr. Gazzaniga.

In addition to his role as head team physician for the Chargers, Dr. Gazzaniga has also served as the head team physician for other professional sports teams and Olympic teams throughout his career, including the New York Jets, New York Islanders and USA Women’s Water Polo. Given his personal collegiate football career at Dartmouth College, Dr. Gazzaniga can easily relate to the special needs of professional athletes and weekend warriors alike.

“Dr. Gazzaniga’s leadership will accelerate our sports medicine programs and raise the bar of what we can do to prevent and treat sports injuries as well as embark on research efforts to identify and improve the future of sports medicine,” said fellow orthopedic surgeon Alan Beyer, M.D., executive medical director and Chairman of the Board for HOI.

The entire team at Newport Orthopedic Institute has complete confidence that Dr. Gazzaniga will do an outstanding job in his newly elected role as Division Chief for Sports Medicine at Hoag Orthopedic Institute.
